Famous Love Poetry has some of the most popular love poetry written.

The famous love poetry on this page are contributed by e.e.cummings, Rainer Maria Rilke, Edna St Vincent Millay and Christopher Brennan. Let us start with e.e. cummings - if there are any heavens:

if there are any heavens

if there are any heavens my mother will (all by herself) have one.

It will not be a pansy heaven nor

a fragile heaven of lilies-of-the-valley but

it will be a heaven of blackred roses

my father will be (deep like a rose

tall like a rose) standing near my

(swaying over her silent)

with eyes which are really petals and see

nothing with the face of a poet really which

is a flower and not a face with hands

which whisper

This is my beloved my

(suddenly in sunlight

he will bow, & the whole garden will bow)

The next famous love poetry for your enjoyment is by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)

Time and Again

TIme and again, however well we know the landscape of love,

and the little church-yard with lamenting names,

and the frightfully silent ravine wherein all the others

end: time and again we go out two together,

under the old trees, lie down again and again

between the flowers, face to face with the sky.

Edna St Vincent Millay also contributes this famous love poetry. It is quite evocative and full of passion, telling of the pain and anguish of a lost love:

Time does not bring relief

Time does not bring relief; you all have lied

Who told me time would ease me of my pain!

I miss him in the weeping of the rain;

I want him at the shrinking of the tide;

The old snows melt from every mountain-side,

And last year's leaves are smoke in every lane;

But last year's bitter loving must remain

Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide.

There are a hundred places where I fear

To go - so with his memory they brim.

And entering with relief some quiet place

Where never fell his foot or shone his face

I say, 'There is no memory of him here!'

And so stand stricken, so remembering him.

Christopher Brennan (1870-1932), is the last entry of famous love poetry on this page. He is a well known Australian poet whose father was a merchant. He was educated at St Ignatius College, Sydney and started his career in 1897 as a poet, librarian and lecturer.

Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her is a particularly famous love poetry of his:

Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her

If questioning would make us wise

No eyes would ever gaze in eyes;

If all our tale were told in speech

No mouths would wander each to each.

Were spirits free from mortal mesh

And love not bound in hearts of flesh

No aching breasts would yearn to meet

And find their ecstasy complete.

For who is there that lives and knows

The secret powers by which he grows?

Were knowledge all, what were our need

To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?

Then seek not, sweet, the "If" and "Why"

I love you now until I die.

For I must love because I live

And life in me is what you give.
